TEACHER EMMANUEL MONGALO Y RUBIO
Born on June 21st 1834 to don Bruno Mongalo and Francisca Rubio, had three siblings; Domitilia, Mercedes and Salvador. He studied in USA, so he spoke perfect English. He wanted to teach poor children. He gave them free tuition. He dedicated to them the first book on elementary geography written in Nicaragua.
He lived his best moments in the classroom. He taught that our homeland was the most important thing, in order to be good citizens.
On June 29th ,1855,during the Battle of Rivas against the invading Yankee filibusters, he gave his great lesson in patriotism by offering himself as volunteer to fight against the blondes who wanted to swallow our sovereignty. Taking off his shirt, Mongalo raced with a torch in hand and set fire to the site where the invaders lodged, don Màximo Espinoza`s lodge. The filibusters were so frightened they fled to the harbor of San Juan del Sur. Due to this heroic action, we Nicaraguan`s celebrate Teachers`Day on this date..
Emanuel died on Feb. 1st, 1872 at the age of 38. He was initially buried in a vault in the Church of Mercy in Granada, but on June 29th, 1970 a solemn ceremony was given to move his body from that church to his hometown Rivas.
